The Collection
The Victoria Karelias Collection of Traditional Greek Costumes was created, initially as a private collection, by the founding member and long-standing President of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Kalamata, V. Karelias. The fruit of 50 years of dedicated effort, it was bestowed on the Lyceum, to be henceforth curated by an institution widely recognised for its contribution to the preservation and promotion of Greek tradition. Ever since, as a token of gratitude and based on a unanimous decision of the Administrative Board of the Lyceum, it has born the name of the collector. The collection comprises a large number of complete outfits, as worn by women and men, from all regions of Greece, a considerable number of gold-embroidered overcoats, excellent pieces of work of the terzides, as well as pieces of jewelry which –much more than being mere decorative accessories- constitute an independent and significant component of the collection in their own right. The listed building that houses the Collection has been loaned to the Lyceum by the Municipality of Kalamata under the condition that its completion and remodeling be funded by the Lyceum itself. The project has been entirely funded by the collector and the George & Victoria Karelia Foundation.
Guided tours
Visitors are guided through the exhibition with the aid of user-friendly digital means. The digital labelling of the showcases favors interaction between the visitors and the exhibits and encourages the children’s inquisitive nature. Guided tours are available for groups, i.e. schools, societies etc. Personal guided tours, special access and parking space are available for PwDs.
Events
Temporary and thematic exhibitions take place, at regular intervals, in the indoor halls of the building. Seminars, speeches, presentations and art exhibitions are held at the multi-purpose hall throughout the year. During summer, concerts, literary evenings, theatrical happenings and other artistic events take place, during summer, at the building’s courtyard. Their objective is to demonstrate that tradition is not stagnant but vibrant, inspired by its ever-changing environment and bound to a perpetual transformation and rediscovery.
Educational programs
In collaboration with the academic community, support is offered to students and researchers interested in greek Traditional costumes and related academic subjects. Inventive educational programs, adapted to the needs and interests of various target groups, are hosted in the multi-purpose hall of the building all year round. In collaboration with the Directorate of primary and secondary school education, specially designed activities familiarize the students with the esthetics, the fabrics and the fabrication technics of greek traditional costumes and encourage the development and the expression of original and innovative ideas inspired by them.
