Pylos has been inhabited since Neolithic times. It was a significant kingdom in Mycenaean Greece, with remains of the so-called “Palace of Nestor” excavated nearby, named after Nestor, the king of Pylos in Homer’s Iliad. In Classical times, the site was uninhabited, but became the site of the Battle of Pylos in 425 BC, during the Peloponnesian War. Don’t miss to visit the Venetian fortress of Pylos.
At the southern trip of the peninsula is the citadel of Methoni, where a massive bridge reaches the Bourdzi tower, which is built on an islet.

From the port of Pylos drive to the ancient Palace of Nestor ( approx. 14 km) which lies on a hill , deep in the country north of Pylos.Despite his age,King Nestor commanded a large fleet of ships at the siege of Troy , Homer praised him for his wisdom.Here in his palace Nestor received Telemachos , when he came to ask for news of his father Odysseus.The site of Nestor's palace was first explored in 1939 and then excavated from 1952 onwards.The buildings which were burnt in about 1200 BC by the Dorians,date from the Mycenaean era and were decorated with frescoes .They contained clay tablets bearing inscriptions which have contributed to our understanding of the Mycenaean language.Near the palace many tombs have been found including several beehive tombs. Continue to Methoni ( approx. 15 km from Pylos), the watcher of the eastern Mediterranean.The village stands on a pleasant site overlooking a bay protected by two islands.For coast -wise traffic, whether for piracy or for legitimate interchange , the place with its litle harbor was an admirable refuge for small craft operating in the primitive conditions. You will visit the Methoni Fortress, still hiding some of the spell of the medieval years.Traces of Greek foundations can still be detected here and there beneath the existing 13th century fortifications.These, however , are mostly a Venetian rebuilding of 1514,as shown by the inevitable lion of St.Mark and French repairs of 1828.The only gateway faces the mainland,and in front of it an antique granite column with a Byzantine capital also carries the Venetian lion.Return to Pylos for a typical Greek Meze with ouzo while enjoying the beautiful view of the historical bay.
