Close to the city of Pirgos lies the famous archaeological site of Olympia , where the Olympic Games took place every four years,from 776 B.C.until 393 A.D.The ruins of the sanctuary and the new museum of the city,which displays finds of the site , show some of the most important works of Classical art.
Olympia, the sanctuary of Zeus and birthplace of the Olympic Games, lies in a verdant valley of the western Peloponnese at the confluence of the rivers Alpheios and Kladeos. A landscape of great natural beauty, the whole valley was in ancient times thickly wooded and full of wild olive trees, from the leaves of which were made the wreaths that crowned the Olympian champions hence the site was named Altis, meaning grove.

From Katakolon we drive to Olympia ( 36 km, approx. 45 minutes),the birthplace of the Olimpic Games, first held in honor of Zeus in 776 BC.They took place every four years without interruption until they were banned by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius in 393 AD, then revised in 1896 by Pierre de Coubertin.German archaeologists began the excavations in 1874, which have today revealed the magnificence of this site.During the course of the visit ( approx. 1½ hours on the site and 45 minutes in the Museum, you will see the remains of the Gymnasium, and the Palestra, a sports arena,where the athletes,particularly the wrestlers,were trained.The leonidaion was a huge hostelry which consisted of four ranges of rooms set round an atium with a circular pool in the center.The temple of Zeus was once the richest and largest in the sanctuary and it contained the giant statue of Olympian Zeus, one of te " Seven Wonders of the World ". A few columns have been re-erected among the remains of the imposing foundations of the temple o Hera ( Heraion ), in which many statues were found,including the famous Hermes By Praxiteles.The cities of Greek colonies have built on a terrace overlooking the sanctuary some dozen treasuries in the form of small Doric temples and it is here where offerings were made to the Gods.The starting and finishing lines of the Stadium are still visible and the distance between them was known as a " stadion ". The museum contains a unique collection of Greek sculpfure including the famous statue of Hermes by Praxiteles , 330 BC ,masterpiece of classical art.Sourrounding the central hall, devoted to the pediments and metopes of the temple of Zeus you will find a series of rooms containing relics found during the excavations.If time permits on our way back to Katakolon, we will stop for souvenir shopping in the village of Olympia.
