Join us at this tour and explore hidden gems villages and monasteries in the area of Kynouria like Ano Doliana, Monastery Malevis, Monastery Palaiopanagias and the seaside village of Astros !
Ano Doliana is a green mountain village with a wonderful view and known for the victorious battle of Nikitaras, also called Turkophagus, in May 1821.
It is located at 1050 meters, 25 km from Tripoli, 45 from Astros and has good tourist infrastructure, with hostels, taverns. Ideal village for weekends and three days, suitable for those who love nature and walks, through the village passes the European Trail E4. While visitors show a special preference for the Forest Village located just outside Ano Doliana. Doliana marble is famous while you can visit the Christofili Folklore Museum and see the art and tradition of the area.
Monastery Panagias (Virgy Mary) Malevis
In the idyllic, cedar-covered area of Agios Petros Kynourias, on the slopes of Parnon mountain, the impressive Malevi Monastery is found. The name Malevi is associated with the highest peak of Parnon, (Malevo) where the monastery was originally built.One of the most renowned monasteries in the Peloponnese, this is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. (The myrrh scented icon is the work of the Apostle Luke.) The monastery is mentioned in the golden bull (decree) of Palaiologos in 1320, but its cathedral was built in 1616.
Monastery of Palaiopanagias
On the way from mountains to the Aegean sea through Oreini Meligou to Astros, you will visit the Monastery of Palaiopanagia on our right. The monastery retains its original character with a few modern interventions. The katholikon ( Main Church) is a four-aisled cross-roof and was built in 1814. The first historical mention is made in 1612 while others mention in 1310.
Astros
You will let the mountainside behind and in certain time , front of you,the vast blue sea of Aegean. Astros is you next stop,one of the most famous summer resorts in the Peloponnese, with special beauty is the picturesque natural harbor and the so-called “Island” by the locals with the incredible view of the Argolic Gulf. “Island” is the name of a part of the settlement that is built on the slopes of an asteroid hill. The houses in this part have retained their traditional color while at the top there is the famous medieval castle of Paralio Astros.
