Without a doubt one of the most popular pastimes for a Greek is his food, they say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, well that saying must have been made up by a Greek woman!  With so much time being spent on food, it’s easy to say that the recipes have been perfected and are truly out of this world.  A gift to take back home from your holiday in Peloponnese will be the knowledge to prepare a healthy, tasty Mediterranean meal from your kitchen back home.

On our culinary tour, we aim to share with you the importance of using fresh, local ingredients, the correct use of spices and herbs; and of course the joie de vivre that goes with preparing a Mediterranean meal.
After the preparation of the meal, it is time to sit back and enjoy the nectar of the Gods – locally produced wines will be served throughout the meal. Wander at the traditional village of Kastania with the narrow streets and the well preserved byzantine chapels of Agios Petros , Agios Nikolaos and Agios Ioannis. Also, you can visit the well preserved Tower museum of Dourakis in the square of Kastania with the main church of Virgin Mary.

Summary - Program:
Summary - Program:

Morning departure from your accommodation and drive to the mountain village of Kastania.
There are many villages in Greece called Kastania - in fact on the eastern side of the Taygetus, probably less than ten kilometres as the crow flies, is another Kastania - sometimes called Kastanista or Mikri Kastania. The literal translation is Sweet Chestnut - 'castagne' in French, 'castagna' in Italian etc.etc.
The Outer Mani Kastania is a village which in earlier days (and the first mention of it in that name is from 1278) was one of the most important in the area. This was probably due to its easily defensible position and possibly its proximity to Byzantine Mistra across the mountains. At the top of the plateau that runs from Kalyves to Pirgos the village is tucked into a blind valley under the lower slopes of the Taygetus and is invisible from the coast. The Turkish traveller Evliya Celebi visited Kastania circa 1670 and reported it as having three hundred tile roofed houses built in the midst of olive trees, figs and gardens. "There are many sources of water", he wrote, "as well as a charming people. The village provides four hundred armed infidels. The people of Kastania belong to the inhabitants of Prasteio." Leake didn't visit Kastania in 1805 as the local kapetani, Konstantino Nikoraki was one of those opposed to the then Bey Antonis Grigorakis who Leake relied on for safe travel. Leake however described the village as one of the largest in Mani.

Nowadays a sleepy backwater, mainly populated by senior citizens, it was once the refuge of heroes of the Greek War of Independence and the Dourakis tower in the centre still points to its elevated position in the hierarchy of the region, its families squabbling with the Troupakis-Mourtzinos clan to the north and those of Milia to the south. There are hints that the Dourakis tower, named after the clan which dominated Kastania in the 18th and early 19th centuries, which looms over the central plataea of Kastania, is going to become part of a set of Mani Museums. The dourakis tower is renovated recently and it is one of the top visits in traditional Maniot village.
Upon arrival of the village at the main square you will have the change to participate at our cooking lessons by a Greek local lady for Greek traditional recipes. The goal of this tour is to share the love of nature, the local products , culinary and local sights -history.During our prepared meal is cooking, you will have the chance for a small walking tour to the village of Kastania and visit the typical byzantine chapels such Agios Ioannis, Agios Petros, Agios Nikolaos, the cathedral in the main square and the tower of Dourakis. There a number of churches well worth visiting - most from the Byzantine period. Our cooked meal is ready for taste !! Our next stop will be the mountain village of Milea passing throuth other mountain villages such as Karyovouni e.t.c..
Milea is an old village split into three sections – a lower section below the road, a middle section slightly further on and an upper section on a hill above. The Koimisis tis Theotokou church in the small square in the lower section, Kato Hora, has a bell tower dated 1776, decorated with carvings, and with a wonderful device of connecting metal rods for ringing the church bells.
Our lunch stop will be at Thalames at the main square. The hilly (about 450m.) traditional settlement of Thalames is in the southern part of the region of Mani, on the road from Kardamyli to Laconia. Enjoy your typical Maniot lunch..After your lunch return to your accommodation via other Mniot villages Agios Nikolaos,Stoupa, Kardamyli, full of impressions from your activity in Messinian Mani area.
