Do you know where the “hidden” Paradise and waterfalls are?
A “hidden” little paradise that you should not miss with beautiful waterfalls, gorges and a village with a long history.
Kato Melpeia Messinia: The “hidden” waterfalls of Koutentou
Just 40 km from Kalamata and 15 from Meligalas there is an area that as soon as you discover it you will fall in love with it. The Waterfalls of Kato Melpeia in Messinia in combination with the lakes and gorges create a dreamy natural landscape for anyone who wants to escape from the city and feel the beauties of nature.
At the other end of the village and below the gorge of Lagada, which has been characterized as one of the best in Greece, is the plane tree forest of the Koumbe springs.
Idyllic landscape. Numerous age-old plane trees coexist twinned, embracing their branches, giving calm, relaxation and coolness to the visitor. In the background, the five-tap fountain with the quote from our ancestors built in 1912 to teach us (interpreted): “the drops that run from this fountain will teach us over the centuries how much people can achieve when they are single”.
The rock reminiscent of Meteora and swimming in the lakes.
Next to the waterfall there is a majestic rock whose face will take you for a few seconds to Meteora. The only thing that will “spoil” the calm of the moment will be the crystal clear water that falls with force from the waterfall. Then he walked to the lakes following the water paths. Weather permitting you can even swim in their crystal clear waters.
The Messinian gulf on your plate from the castle of Krempenis or Garantzas
Enjoy the most magical view of the area from the castle of the Venetians and the Franks located near the waterfalls. From there, gaze at the view to the Messinian Gulf. Then you can meet Katsoleikos. The first watermill in the area whose view alone will take you to a different old Greek era.
From above, the gorge takes your breath away, slicing the steep mountains in the middle, while at the top of the ruined castle stands a sleepless guard. The slope opposite the pines is overgrown, planted in 1958 by the then students of the local Primary School.
After the tour in nature you will need rest and the village of Kato Melpeia is the ideal choice. According to history, the first houses built there date back to 1260 BC. The rivers that cross it, the hospitable people and the stone bridges create a fairytale landscape. Enjoy food or coffee in the traditional taverns and do not neglect to visit the Folklore Museum that recommends the tradition of the place through the centuries.
A perfect excursion for the whole family.
