Kalamata , proud mistress of the Messenian gulf… Kalamata is a destination that easily serves as a strategic base for exciting touring of the area. One side bathes in the deep blue waters of the gulf of Messenia, while the other leans heavy against the foot of Mount Taygetos, the imposing Kalathi. The capital of Messenia is a modern urban centre with a good street plan, aristocratic buildings, pedestrian walkways, good tourism infrastructure and an intense nightlife. Nevertheless, the Gulf of Messenia gives it a seaside air that makes it stand out from other towns in the Peloponnese, and thanks to its fertile soil, the region is famous for its cuisine.

HIGHLIGHTS

The medieval castle of Kalamata: The fort has an interesting history, having been Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian and Ottoman at various periods. The Venetians burned it in 1540 before yielding it to the Turks, who did the same in turn in 1685.
The cathedral of Ypapanti and the square with the whole historical center : Kalamata's massive 19th-century cathedral is home to the icon after which the town takes its modern name. Pilgrims visit for its miracle-working icon of the Virgin Mary known as kalo mata (good eye). The icon was discovered in the stables of the Ottoman aga (governor), who converted to Christianity as a result of the miracles it was believed to have performed.
The Museum of traditional Greek costumes :Opened in 2017, this stunning museum features a remarkable collection of Greek costumes that was donated by Victoria Karelia. Far from moth-eaten old hand-me-downs, the clothing showcases male and female folk dress from the 18th to 20th centuries in beautifully curated, dramatically lit exhibits.
Archaeological Museum of Messenia : This partially interactive, child-friendly museum focuses on treasures found in four regions – Kalamata, Pylia, Messini and Trifylia. Exhibits include everything from sculpture, pottery and funereal objects found in tholos tombs (Mycenaean tombs shaped like a beehive) at Nestor's Palace, to Roman mosaics, gold jewellery and votive offerings. It provides wonderful context to the surrounding areas.

Morning or evening departure for half day tour of the Capital City Kalamata. Your first visit the Cathedral the church of Ipapanti,in the north part of the city, the Monastery of St. Konstantine and St . Helen, where the nuns make silk table cloths and handkerchiefs by using the traditional way, the loom.in our panoramic tour you will have the chance to see also the square of 23rd of March and the church of St.Apostles, the Pantazopouleion culture centre , the town hall ,the Benakeion Arhaeological museum, the Art Gallery,the main square of Kalamata ,the main pedestrian commercial street Aristomenous,the marina of Kalamata , the beautifull sea side street of Kalamata with the coconut trees. At the end Free time to explore the historical center of Kalamata end enjoy shopping , before your return to your hotel.
