Pylia, the area around Pylos, is one of the most beautiful and rich in historical and natural monuments areas of the Peloponnese.
The entire area around the Navarino Bay and the Gialova lagoon is full of ancient monuments, fortifications and historical sites. Behind the historic scenery, mountains, waterfalls and endless beaches complement the natural setting of the area.
The number one site of Pylia, Palace of king Nestor, built in the 13th century B.C. , who took part in the Trojan War, was excavated 4 km to the south of Chora. The remains found in the archaeological site are on exhibition in the city museum. 10km to the south of Chora lies one of the finest sandy beach of Greece, the famous Voidokilia beach or Omega beach due to his shape from aerial view. VOIDOKILIA Beach is not only one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, but may be also in the Mediterranean Sea. The sheltered bay is referred to in Homer’s Odyssey and archaeologists believe it was used by King Nestor as a port in ancient times. The curve of Voidokilia seems to be traced with a compass like a giant Greek omega (the name means “cow’s belly”), from the two rocky promontories that define the entrance of it. It is surrounded by a magnificent beach of light, fine sand, protected by the wind, and the crystalline beach invite somone to go swimming. Our next stop for our lunch is Gialova village. This small picturesque settlement will charm its visitors. The natural beauty of the Gialova lagoon in the north, the extraordinary beaches and the history of the wider area offer you more than enough reasons to visit this magical place. This beautiful village is located in the Navarino bay, north of Pilos. Many important historical events took place in this area and until today the visitor might see the remains from the shipwrecks of the Battleship of Navarino in 1827 while snorkeling in the nearby beaches. Today in this lovely village agriculture and tourism are the main economical activities. You will find here some beautiful hotels, rooms to let, campsites, restaurants, cafes, bars, hospitable people and the amazing long organized beach of Gialova.
