The Greek Revolution of 1821 as a pivotal chapter in Greek history and a piece in the puzzle of world history.
The goal of this tour is to comprehend the Greek Revolution of 1821, to highlight its significance, its relationship with other revolutions and wars for independence that flared up at approximately the same time, and the effect it had on the rest of the world and how it was affected by it.
The Greek War of Independence, also known as the Greek Revolution referred to by Greeks in the 19th century as simply the (Greek : Agonas) “Struggle”, was a successful war of independence waged by Greek revolutionaries against the Ottoman Empire between 1821 and 1830.
The Greeks were later assisted by Great Britain, France and Russia, while the Ottomans were aided by their North African vassals, particularly the eyalet of Egypt. The war led to the formation of modern Greece. The revolution is celebrated by Greeks around the world as independence day on 25 March.
The Battle of Areopolis took place on 17 March 1821 between the Greek irregular revolutionary forces and the Ottoman forces of the city. It was one of the first events of the Greek War of Independence. The result was the capture of the city by the Greeks.
On March 17, 1821, the Mani Chiefs reaffirmed their faith in the ideals and traditions of Hellenism and Orthodoxy by raising the revolutionary flag in Areopolis. The Maniot Heroes, together with Petrobei Mavromichalis, swore that they would fight together for the Freedom of the Nation and swore “Victory or Death”.
The heirs of this will are not only the Mani of the next generations, but all the Greeks.
Areopolis became the first city in Mani to be liberated.
Greek independence heroes Petros Mavromichalis, and other Greek rebels liberated Areopolis in the first major battle in Mani area and the Hellenic War of Independence.
In the Church of Taxiarches, liturgy in Areopolis every year on this day on March 17, Mani celebrating the victory and it was where the Hellenic Revolution was declared.

It is not mandatory to participate as a member of the local groups for the celembrations and Parade. You can see the celebrations,as audience, just find a proper spot with nice view around the Square of Tripoli,Pedion Areos.

Especially for us – Greeks, History and Culture are undoubtedly the driving forces for our survival in our nation’s adventurous journey into space-time.
