This tour is designed to guide you to the best olive picking procedure showing you the way of olive picking and harvesting in the small village of Androusa where you can participate in the olive harvest.

On an olive picking day you will be working and staying in beautiful surroundings (olive groves are often full of wild flowers and butterflies), you will receive a warm welcome from owners keen to share with you their way of life and gain the satisfaction of helping to gather in the harvest. Even better you will discover that nothing tastes nicer than fresh extra virgin olive oil produced from the olives that you have helped to hand pick from the tree and will have watched being pressed in the local mill.

A 3h guided Olive oil tour that starts with the visit at the magnificent 13th century castle of Androusa, the harvesting of the perennial olive trees, the olive mill visit to produce fresh olive oil, and ends up with a revealing olive oil & Kalamata olives tasting accompanied local goods.

Olive picking and Harvest period October till end of January , probably begging of February, depending the weather conditions and the quantity of the production.

HIGHLIGHTS

Our meeting point is at the magnificent 13th century castle of Androusa, located in the heart of Messinia, just 20 minutes drive from Kalamata and 10 minutes from Ancient Messene. At this idyllic landscape we talk about the history, the tradition and the mythical story of the castle olive trees…
The olive grove is our next visit. We walk though the perennial olive trees, we meet local families that harvest their own trees and they teach us how to pick up some olives. Hand picking the olives directly into a basket or with a net is a lifetime experience.
In the heart of Androusa Village we visit a unique Olive Oil mill that is located there since 1904. The 5th generation owner will explain to us the procedure of the extraction, and we are going to taste directly from the separator fresh and warm extra virgin olive oil.
Τhe dining table is filled with the special blue olive oil tasting glasses and you are about to become a tasting expert! Taste the extra virgin olive oil of “Koroneiki” Variety and learn about its organoleptic characteristics…recognize the elements that define the extra virgin olive oil …taste different varieties of Greek Extra Virgin Olive oil such us “Manaki”, “Xalkidikis”, “Mavroelia” etc and evaluate them.
What about food pairing? The extra virgin olive oil of different varieties is matched with traditional recipes including fruits & gourmet small dishes and surprises us.
The history, the soul, the tradition, the gastronomy of Messinia are revealed though the Olive oil paths… enjoy a unique experience in our endless olive groves filled with the wisdom, the flavor and the aroma of Peloponnese.

A fun and informative tour :

1.Explore the castle of Androusa
Our meeting point is at the 13th century castle of Androusa, located in the heart of Messinia, just a 20 minute drive from Kalamata and 10 minutes from Ancient Messene, so as to reach an ancient olive grove. We prepare our coffee next to the perennial olive trees and we start our relaxing walk towards the vineyard. We discover the Greek wine varieties, and find out stories and secrets about the supreme wine that we are going to taste.

2.Explore the castle of Androusa
The castle of Androusa with the magnificent view at the endless olive groves of Messinia is our next destination. We have fun by discovering an “olive treasure”, while we talk about the history, the tradition and the mythical stories of the castle’s olive trees…

3.Visit an olive oil mill
In the center of Androusa Village, only 200m away, we visit a unique Olive Oil mill that has been located there for more than 120 years. The 5th generation owner will explain to us the procedure of the extraction, the storage and standardization process of the extra virgin olive oil in the past and nowadays.

4.Discover the quality of extra virgin olive oil in an olive oil tasting workshop!
Τhe dining table is set with the special blue olive oil tasting glasses awaiting you to become a tasting expert! Taste the extra virgin olive oil of the Koroneiki variety and learn about its sensory characteristics, recognize the elements that define the extra virgin olive oil, taste different varieties of Greek extra virgin olive oil such us “Manaki”, “Chalkidikis”, “Makris” etc and evaluate them…

5.Pair your food with extra virgin olive oil!
What about food? The extra virgin olive oil of different varieties is matched with traditional recipes including yogurt, fruit and vegetables. You will be surprised!

6.Enjoy a traditional light meal
The day, full of emotions and new knowledge, ends with a variety of traditional dishes..Fresh vegetables from our garden, Greek Gruyère cheese, tzatziki, Kalamata olives, olive tapenade, lalagia (local breadsticks), smoked ham and sausage, spinach pie, vegetable stew and of course wine and homemade dessert.

Participants should feel comfortable in walking and able to walk.

For any tour is required a minimoum number of participations in order to be materialized. In case of less participants our travel agency has the right to cancel the tour or to postpone the date in another with more participants.Last day of information about the materialisation of the tour can be 1 day before departure as some new last minute - bookings or cancelations can influence the tour.

For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours in advance of the start date of the prebooked tour.
